affordable housing and new hope in the land of abandonment
The Penrose neighborhood is a ten by ten block neighborhood in Northern Detroit. In a landscape of vacant lots, derelict homes, long-time residents and businesses, new development was occurring in a haphazard manner, lacking form, coordination and coherency. A preliminary neighborhood framework has been developed envisioning possibilities for urban form and function based on existing assets and stakeholder needs and aspirations. Plan elements include a large park, re-use of vacant school building, a Four Season Market Farm, and community gardens to provide jobs and access to affordable food, natural playgrounds and new affordable housing.
