Adjusting the pressure-reducing valve on the main water supply pipe is a quick and straightforward technique to raise water pressure; search for a conical-shaped valve next to the water meter, close to where the main water line enters the house. The locknut should then be tightened to secure the valve. You may have to shut off the water at the kitchen sink before you can adjust the valve.
If you want to adjust the pressure further, you will need to replace the main water supply pipe. This is because the size of the pipe determines how much pressure you can achieve. The bigger the pipe, the higher the pressure. If you replace it with another size pipe, then this will not give enough pressure to reach all the fixtures in the house.
The average home has 5-10 feet of 18 gauge steel water piping. This means that the diameter of each section of pipe is 1/4 inch or 6 mm or larger. Large deposits of calcium and other minerals build up inside the pipe over time and reduce the flow of water. This results in low water pressure for those parts of the house were there is no water obstruction.
Increasing the water pressure gets harder as you go farther from the source of water. This is because more metal pipes are involved, and the total weight of these pipes needs to be supported by the soil.
To begin, turn off the water at your home's internal water main. Turn the shutoff valve all the way to the right. Turn the locking nut on the water pressure regulator to the left to loosen it. Turn the adjustable screw to the left to lower the water pressure and to the right to boost it. When you have found the setting that works for your house, lock the regulator back in place. Turn the shutoff valve back on and test your water pressure. If it is still low, follow these steps again.
