Why do we celebrate National Student Day?

World Students' Day: As with every year, the birth anniversary of former Indian President and scientist APJ Abdul Kalam is observed as World Students' Day. Kalam is well renowned for his support for education and his affection for students. He has said that "if I could turn back the clock, I would choose to be a student for a day."

He was born on 23rd September 1945 into a middle class family in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu (then Madras State). His parents wanted him to become an engineer but he showed an interest in science from an early age. He went to St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli where he completed his high school studies. Thereafter, he joined the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru as a graduate student and later became one of its faculty members. He also served as the 11th president of India from 2nd July 2002 to 30th June 2007.

Kalam is known for his ideas and initiatives for the empowerment of women, his emphasis on education, and his efforts for the development of science and technology in India. He has authored several books including My Journey So Far, which has been translated into many languages including English.

How do we celebrate World Student Day?

Every year on October 15, the world celebrates World Students' Day to commemorate Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam's birth anniversary. When Abdul Kalam was 79 years old, the United Nations agreed to commemorate World Student Day on his birthday. In 2010, the inaugural World Students' Day was observed. The theme for this year's event is "Inspire! Motivate! Empower!"

Abdul Kalam was India's first nuclear scientist and engineer. He held several important positions in the government of India including President of India and Chief Executive Officer of India's Defense Research & Development Organization. He studied at Madras University and later at Tumkur University where he completed his PhD in physics. After joining the Indian Institute of Science, he moved back home and started work on missile defense programs for the government. He eventually became one of the leading proponents of the nuclear program in India. He died in July 2015 at the age of 87 after suffering from diabetes for several years.

Kalam had many achievements in science and technology that still influence people today. Some of his most famous inventions include the Kalam-Krishnan rocket, the Kalam Superbike, and the Kalam Car.

World Students' Day was created by UN General Assembly resolution 57/267 of December 6, 2006.
